Gallbladder surgical treatment, commonly known as cholecystectomy, is a procedure to remove the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small organ located beneath the liver that stores bile, a digestive fluid that helps break down fats. For laparoscopic surgery, 3–4 small incisions are made. The surgeon inserts instruments and a camera through the incisions. The gallbladder is carefully detached from the liver and bile ducts. The gallbladder is removed through one of the incisions. Incisions are closed with sutures or staples. Recovery Laparoscopic patients often go home the same day or after an overnight stay. Open surgery may require a longer hospital stay. Patients are advised to avoid fatty foods for some time after surgery. Full recovery usually takes 1–3 weeks.
